Fortnite's Oct 22 Discover Deadline: The Three Images Your Island Needs Now
Hot Take: the scariest boss in Fortnite this week isn't on an island. It's a checklist.
Epic's v42.40 ecosystem notes say players are starting to see a redesigned Discover. Starting October 22, you need three things to publish or update an island: a portrait thumbnail, a landscape thumbnail, and a logo. If any one is missing, your update doesn't go out. That's the whole rule, and it lands two days from now. (Epic, v42.40 notes)
Why this one stings
A lot of island makers built a map, slapped one landscape thumb on it, and moved on to the fun part. Now that one image is a third of the job. Creators are already posting asks for UEFN thumbnail designers who know click-through (example). Others are flat-out saying Discover feels unfair because you have to pay to get seen (example).
I get both feelings. But the deadline isn't the hard part. The hard part is remembering, across every island you own, which ones are missing which image, right before you push a hotfix at 11 PM.
The checklist, island by island
For every island you plan to publish or update after Oct 22, check for:
- Portrait thumbnail: the tall one for the new Discover layout.
- Landscape thumbnail: the classic wide one.
- Logo: the island's own mark.
If you've got one island, that's a sticky note. If you've got eight, plus a couple of collabs and a map you forgot existed, that's a spreadsheet you'll never update. That's where a bot earns its keep.
The Grok Bot setup I'd use
This is our angle, and it's deliberately boring. Boring means it works.
- A routine that runs before the deadline and before every planned update, and lists each island with its missing assets.
- A skill that writes the asset brief for each missing image: island name, mood, and the one thing a thumb has to show. It also drafts concept prompts you can hand to a designer or an image tool.
- Draft-only by default. The bot never uploads or publishes anything, and it never pays anyone. You approve the art, and you hit publish.
If you want a running start, the Social Design Agent covers the image-drafting side, the Fortnite Island Picker lives in the same Fortnite lane, and the whole gaming category is one click away. New to setting bots up? Start with the guides.
What a bot can't do
It can't make Discover fair. It can't promise the algorithm will love your portrait thumb. And it shouldn't pretend to be a designer if you'd rather pay a real one. The job here is smaller and more honest: never get blocked on an update because the third image slipped your mind.
Watch list
Epic could slip or soften the Oct 22 requirement. If that happens, we'll update this post. Until then, treat Wednesday as real.
Which island is missing its logo right now? Be honest.
